In our second post on ND filters, we discuss the available types of filters and their respective pros and cons.
There are four types of ND filters. You have a variable ND threaded to the front of your lens. If you adjust it, the amount of light increases or decreases. It is perfect for making minor adjustments; however, you must unscrew it completely when you want to remove it. The following kind is a solid ND. You must pull this filter out whenever you want to change it and stick in a new one. To put it on your camera, you typically need a matte box, but the quality that comes from these is outstanding. Next up is a lens-mounted ND filter. This goes between your lens and camera and is often a variable ND you can adjust. When you want to take it off completely, you have to dismount your lens, take off the lens mount, and reapply. My favorite kind of ND is ND built into the camera. It allows you to go from no NDs to all your NDs with a button.
